This study from Wentworth Institute of Technology evaluates the impact of using the Telecommunication Instructional Modelling System (TIMS) in a senior-level Communications Systems course. By integrating TIMS hardware labs alongside MATLAB-based simulations, students gain hands-on experience with real analog signals across topics like AM/FM modulation, sampling, and digital modulation schemes (ASK, BPSK, FSK).
The paper highlights measurable improvements in student performance, with those using TIMS achieving a 77.8% rate of B- or higher, compared to 60.8% under traditional methods. Surveys showed 96.3% of students felt TIMS helped them better understand the content, and 92.6% reported increased interest in the subject.
This work demonstrates how TIMS can bridge theory and practical understanding, engaging students in real-world telecommunications learning.
